Shanghai has three principal business districts:
- West: Hongqiao
- Central: Puxi (Downtown)
- East: Pudong
Developed as part of Shanghai¡¯s Western expansion in the late 1980¡¯s and early 1990¡¯s. The principal office conurbations in this area are found around ¡®New City Centre¡¯ centred on Zunyi Rd., Zhongshan Park and along Yan¡¯An West Rd. This area is popular with business and industries such as textiles, light engineering and production offices, requiring access to the provinces immediately surrounding Shanghai.
Known as ¡®Puxi¡¯ (meaning ¡®west of the Huangpu river¡¯ in Chinese), this is the historic downtown area of Shanghai, containing its Central Business District (CBD) centred on five principal locations: Nanjing Rd., Huaihai Rd., People¡¯s Sq., Xujiahui and The Bund. With the best public transport, shopping and restaurant facilities in Shanghai, the downtown area is the leading location for multinational head offices and service companies.
From fields to financial services in 10-years, Shanghai¡¯s newest area, (meaning ¡®east of the Huangpu river¡¯ in Chinese) is promoted as the financial hub for the city. Most banks and larger financial institutions tend to establish operations here along with companies requiring acces to the international port, airport and free trade zone. The main office district is centred around Lujiazui.
